Do Tesla Coils Need Spark Gaps And Capacitors? – Generating Free Electricity For Your Home
Source lifestyle.ezinemark.com 18th January 2011 – Very interesting article about Tesla Generators and Tesla Coils.
Whenever you pass alternating current through a coil of wire, you get a form of resistance called inductive reactance. The magnetic field from the alternating current actually induces an opposing current back into the wire. Capacitors also have a form of resistance called capacitive reactance. The funny thing is that inductive reactance and capacitive reactance can cancel each other out. When that happens, you get a resonant circuit. The energy is constantly bouncing back and forth between the magnetic field around the coil and the charge in the capacitor. With a Tesla Coil, the energy is amplified to very high voltage at high frequency. The Tesla coil was first invented around 1891. It was originally used in experiments regarding x-rays, lighting, alternating currents, and phosphorous. The coils were used by telegraph companies until the 1920′s to help and transmit wireless signals. Uses today are mainly for educational and entertainment purposes.
